Last Saturday’s US Open final between players Serena Williams and Naomi Ōsaka was an opportunity to celebrate two black women at the top of professional tennis. Instead the electric, consequential and career defining game was wrested by a man on the sidelines. We believe the controversial final moments of the US Open were stained by the implicit bias and “abuse of power” of chair umpire Carol Ramos. To put it plainly, we believe Ramos expressed gender and racial bias in his handling of Serena Williams so-called violations. We demand that an independent commission be formed to investigate gender and racial bias in the International Tennis Federation and that $14,000 of Serena’s penalty fines be expunged.
